About Colon Cancer
|
Colon cancer is the fourth most prevalent
cancer, and second among cancer-related deaths. One in
eighteen Americans will develop colon cancer. Early colon
cancer is asymptomatic. Research has demonstrated clear
benefits from early detection and treatment of colon cancer
and colon pre-cancers (polyps). Because of the importance
of this cancer, it is virtually a universal recommendation
that all individuals over age 50 have colonoscopy for
colon cancer screening. Colonoscopy is not only the best
way to screen the colon for cancer and pre-cancerous growths,
but it also permits removal of pre-cancerous growths and
possibly even cure of cancer in the same setting. Individuals
with a family history of colon cancer or colon polyps
are at increased risk for colon cancer and may require
screening beginning at an earlier age. As well, individuals
with symptoms attributable to the colon, including bleeding,
and change in bowel habits may merit an evaluation. Colonoscopy
is a relatively safe and pain free procedure, lasting
around 30 minutes, and is performed as an outpatient.
It consists of passing a flexible tube about the thickness
of your finger around your colon. You will receive medicine
to minimize discomfort. During this process, small instruments
passed through the endoscope permit sampling of or removal
of pre-cancerous growths. Dr. Sarzen will be happy to
answer any questions you might have during your consultation.
